Construction Guide

Penetration Sealing

A single unsealed penetration can reduce wall STC by 10–20 dB. All penetrations must be treated as critical acoustic events.

Electrical Box Penetrations

[AC] NO back-to-back boxes on same partition wall — minimum 600mm horizontal offset.
RequirementSpecificationReason
Box materialSteel boxes ONLY — no plastic in STC-rated wallsPlastic boxes flex, breaking seal integrity
Putty padOSI SpecSeal or equivalent behind EVERY boxFills void around box, maintains fire + acoustic rating
OffsetMinimum 600mm horizontal between boxes on opposite facesBack-to-back creates direct sound path through wall
Camera walls (Option A)50mm box extension ring, flush with panel facePanels can cover outlet zone
Non-camera walls (Option B)15cm clear zone around outlet, surround with panelsService access without removing panels
Panel attachment near outletsZ-clip (not adhesive)Need service access — removable mounting

Cable Conduit Penetrations

ElementSpecification
Conduit type25mm EMT steel conduit
Wall sleeveOversized sleeve, 10mm annular gap around conduit
Gap fillRockwool RWA45 + Tremco acoustic sealant — BOTH faces
Audio separationSeparate conduit from power, 300mm minimum separation
Crossings90° crossings ONLY where audio and power must cross

SB-01 / Studio Signal Penetrations

SB-01 — Control ↔ VO Live

Wall
Wall 6 (STC 53)
Conduit
32mm steel conduit
Cable
Mogami W2534 quad-core XLR
Sealing
Rockwool + Tremco both faces
Connection
One end rigid, other end flexible connector

Video Studio — No Fixed Signal Penetration

Wall
W5 / W6 preserved intact
Conduit
None required for studio-to-control signal
Capture
Sony FX30 + portable field recorder on set
Benefit
No inter-room penetration, zero coordination between rooms
SSOT v3.7
Both rooms bookable independently
Rule: Pack annular gap with Rockwool + Tremco sealant. Seal both wall faces. One end rigid connection, other end flexible connector — never rigid both sides. Video Studio exception: no fixed studio-to-control conduit is permitted in SSOT v3.7.

HVAC Duct Penetrations

ElementSpecification
Duct sleeveOversized sleeve, 25mm annular gap
Gap fillRockwool + acoustic sealant
Routing ruleALL ducts through buffer spine ONLY — no direct wall penetrations between rooms
Back-to-backNo back-to-back penetrations on opposite walls of same room
Refrigerant pipes32mm sleeve, foam backer rod, sealant both faces
Flex connectors150mm minimum at all IDU connections [AC]

What NOT to Do

MistakeConsequenceCorrect Approach
Back-to-back outlet boxesSTC loss of 10–15 dB through wall600mm minimum horizontal offset
Plastic electrical boxes in STC wallsFlexing breaks seal, degrades STCSteel boxes only
Unsealed conduit penetrationsDirect sound path through wallRockwool + Tremco both faces
Rigid connections both sides of penetrationStructure-borne vibration transmissionOne rigid, one flexible
Foam instead of acoustic sealantFoam hardens, cracks, loses sealTremco non-hardening sealant only
